I belong to the world." [Nazrul Rochonaboli, Bangla Academy, Vol. 4, p. 91]<br />He was a very versatile poet, lyricist and writer who composed many beautiful verses of poems, prose, songs and classical music.<br />Nazrul was known as the ‘Rebel’ poet in Bengali literature and the ‘Bulbul’ or Nightingale of Bengali music, was one of the most colourful personalities of undivided Bengal. He may be considered a pioneer of post-Tagore modernity in Bengali poetry. The new kind of poetry that he wrote made possible the emergence of modernity in Bengali poetry during the 1920s and 1930s. His poems, songs, novels, short stories, plays and political activities expressed strong protest against various forms of oppression - slavery, communalism, feudalism and colonialism - and forced the British government not only to ban many of his books but also to put him in prison. While in prison, Kazi Nazrul lslam once fasted for 40 days to protest against the tyranny of the then British government.<br />Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on May 24, 1899 in Churulia village, Bardhawan in West Bengal, India. His mother was Zaheda Khatun and his father Kazi Fakir Ahmed was the Imaam of the local village mosque. The second of three sons and one daughter, Nazrul lost his father in 1908 when he was only 9 years old and his father died at the age of 60. Nazrul’s nickname was “Dukhu Mia” (hapless chap), a name that aptly reflects the hardships and misery of his life right from the early years. His father’s premature death forced him, at the age of 10, to become the Muazzin (a caller for prayer) of the local mosque. This early exposure to the principles and practices of Islam was to have a significant impact on his later literary endeavors.<br />In 1910, at the age of 11, Nazrul returned to his student life enrolling in class VI. The Headmaster of the school remembers him in the following words: “He was a small, good-looking boy, always the first to greet me. I used to smile at him and pat him on the back. He was very shy.”<br />Again, financial difficulties compelled him to leave school after class VI, and Dukhu Mia ended up as a cook in a bakery and tea-shop in Asansole.<br />In his youth, Nazrul joined a folk-opera group inspired by his uncle Bazle Karim who himself was well-known for composing songs in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. As a member of this folk-opera group, the young Nazrul was not only a performer, but began composing poems and songs himself. Nazrul’s involvement with the group was an important formative influence in his literary career.<br />Nazrul submitted to the hard life with characteristic courage. In 1914, Nazrul escaped from the rigours of the tea-shop to re-enter a school in Darirampur village, Trishal in Mymensingh district. Although Nazrul had to change schools two or three times, he managed to continue up to class X, and in 1917 he joined the Indian Army when boys of his age were busy preparing for the matriculation pre-test examination.<br />For almost three years, up to March-April 1920, Nazrul served in the army and was promoted to the rank of Battalion Quarter Master Havildar. Even as a soldier, he continued his literary and musical activities, publishing his first piece ‘The Autobiography of a Delinquent” (Saogat, May 1919) and his first poem, “Freedom” in Bangiya Musalman. Sahitya-patrika, (July 1919), during his posting at Karachi cantonment. What is remarkable is that even when he was in Karachi, he subscribed regularly to the leading contemporary literary periodicals that were published from Calcutta like, Prabasi, Bharatbarsha, Bharati, Saogat and others.<br />When after the 1st World War in 1920, the 49th Bengal Regiment was disbanded, Nazrul returned to Calcutta to begin his journalistic and literary life. His poems, essays and novels began to appear regularly in a number of periodicals and within a year he became well known not only to the prominent Muslim intellectuals of the time, but was also accepted by the Hindu literary establishment in Calcutta. In 1921, Nazrul went to Santiniketan to meet Rabindranath Tagore – his master-poet, the source of his inspiration…<br />The same year, Nazrul was engaged to be married to the love of his life - Nargis, the niece of a well-known Muslim publisher Ali Akbar Khan, in Daulatpur, Comilla, but on the day of the wedding (18th June, 1921) Nazrul suddenly backed out at the last moment, and left the place due to some serious misunderstandings and disagreements. However, many songs and poems reveal the deep wound that this experience inflicted on the young Nazrul and his lingering love for Nargis.<br />In 1922, Nazrul published a volume of short stories Byathar Dan (The Gift of Sorrow), an anthology of poems Agnibeena, an anthology of essays Yugabani, and a bi-weekly magazine, Dhumketu. A political poem published in Dhumketu in September 1922, led to a police raid on the magazine’s office, a ban on his anthology Yugabani, and one year’s rigorous imprisonment for the poet himself.<br />On April 14, 1923, when Nazrul lslam was transferred from the Alipore jail to the Hooghly jail, he began a fast to protest the mistreatment by a British jail-superintendent. Immediately, Rabindranath Tagore, who had dedicated his musical play, Basanta, to Nazrul, sent a telegram saying: “Give up hunger strike, our literature claims you”, but the telegram was sent back to the sender with the stamp “addressee not found.”<br />Nazrul broke his fast more than a month later and was eventually released from prison in December 1923. On 25th April 1924, Kazi Nazrul lslam married a Hindu woman Pramila Devi and set up his residence in Hooghly. An anthology of poems ‘Bisher Banshi’ and an anthology of songs ‘Bhangar Gan’ were published later this year and both volumes were seized by the government. Nazrul soon became actively involved in politics (1925), joined rallies and meetings, and became a member of the Bengal Provincial Congress Committee. He also played an active role in the formation of a workers and peasants party.<br />In 1926, Nazrul went and settled in Krishnanagar. His patriotic and nationalistic songs expanded in scope to articulate the aspirations of the downtrodden classes. His music became truly people-oriented in its appeal. Several songs composed in 1926 and 1927 celebrating fraternity between the Hindus and Muslims and the struggle of the masses, gave rise to what may be called “mass music”. Nazrul’s musical creativity established him not only as an egalitarian composer of “mass music”, but also as the innovator of the Bengali Ghazal.<br />The two forms, music for the masses and ghazal, exemplified the two aspects of the youthful poet: struggle and love. Nazrul injected a revitalizing masculinity and youthfulness into Bengali music. Despite illness, poverty and other hardships, Nazrul wrote and composed some of his best songs during his Krishnanagar stay.<br />From 1928 to 1932, Nazrul became directly involved with His Master’s Voice Gramophone Company as a lyricist, composer and trainer, and many records of Nazrul songs, sung by some of the most well-known singers of the time were produced. The newly established Indian Broadcasting Company also enlisted Nazrul as a lyricist and composer and he remained actively involved with several gramophone companies and the Radio till his last working days. Nazrul songs were in great demand on the stage as well. He not only wrote songs for his own plays, but generously provided lyrics and set them to tune for a number of well-known dramatists of the time.<br />In 1929, a colourful national reception was accorded to Nazrul in Calcutta and was attended by prominent people like the scientist Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, Barrister S. Wajid Ali and Subashchandra Bose.<br />In the midst of these productive activities, tragedy struck twice in rapid succession: first, Nazrul’s mother died in 1928; a year later, his 4 year old son Bulbul died of small pox, five months after the birth of his second son Shabyashachi.<br />Between 1928 and 1935, Nazrul published 10 volumes of songs containing over 800 songs of which more than 600 were based on classical ragas, almost 100 were folk tunes and kirtans and some 30 were patriotic and other songs. Thus during the 1930s, Nazrul established a firm classical foundation in Bengali Music. His songs dealt with the themes of love, nature, divinity and nationalism<br />In 1936, the film Vidyapati was produced based on Nazrul’s recorded play. In the same year, Rabindranath Tagore’s novel Gora was filmed with Nazrul as its music director and included one of his own songs. In June 1936, Sachin Sengupta’s important play, Siraj-ud-daulah was staged. The songs and music were written and directed by Nazrul. The play and songs met with such unprecedented success that a gramophone recording was made, and at that time was commonly heard in almost every Bengali household.<br />In October 1939, Nazrul’s relationship with Calcutta Radio was formalized, and numerous musical programs were directly broadcast under his supervision. Worth mentioning are the critical and research oriented programs such as “Haramoni” and “Navaraga-malika”.<br />During 1939, different recording companies issued a total of over 1000 records, 1648 of which were Nazrul’s songs. The total number of his unrecorded songs is perhaps twice as much. Nazrul’s songs were also broadcast from Dhaka Radio. This trend continued throughout 1941, with songs based on many different ragas and narrative ballads. Apart from these, Nazrul occasionally took part in recitation and commentary of the Holy Ouran.<br />In early 1941, Sher-e-Bangla Fazlul Huq commenced re-publication of the daily newspaper Nabayuga (“New Age”). Nazrul was its Chief Editor returning to the world of journalism at the final stage of his active life. On August 8th 1941, Rabindranath Tagore died. Nazrul spontaneously composed two poems in Tagore’s memory, of which one was broadcast and recorded on gramophone. Within a year, Nazrul himself fell seriously ill and gradually lost his power of speech, being stricken by cerebral palsy. Thereafter from July 1942 till his death in August 1976, the poet spent 34 years in mute silence unable to speak even a single word.<br />In October 1942, mental dysfunction set in and Nazrul was admitted to Lumbini Park Mental Hospital in Calcutta, but there was no improvement in his mental condition and he began losing his memory. By then, despite having earned lavish sums through his music, he had also spent recklessly and was in financial difficulties. Many of his old friends turned away in this dark hour, and he became increasingly embittered, as evidenced in this letter to a friend Zulfikar Haider on July 17, 1942 :<br />...I am bed-ridden due to blood pressure. I am writing with great difficulty. My home is filled with worries: illness, debt, creditors; day and night I am struggling.<br />...My nerves are shattered. For the last six months, I used to visit Mr. Haque (A. K. Fazlul Haque, the then Chief Minister of undivided Bengal) daily and spend 5-6 hours like a beggar…I am unable to have quality medical help…<br />This might be my last letter to you. With only great difficulty, I can utter a few words. I am in pain almost all over my body. I might get money like the poet Firdausi on the day of the funeral prayer (janajar namaz).<br />However, I have asked my relatives to refuse that money.<br />Yours,<br />Nazrul<br />Source: Dr. Sushilkumar Gupta, Nazrul Choritmanosh (Calcutta: De's Publishing, 1960), p. 106]<br />Nazrul entered a world of increasing isolation, though still revered by Bengalis. In 1945, Calcutta University awarded him the “Jagattarini Gold medal”. In 1952, he was transferred to the Ranchi Mental Hospital from where he was sent to London for treatment at the initiative of the “Nazrul Treatment Society” formed and financed by some of his ardent admirers when they came to know of his financial hardships.<br />Several eminent physicians in London including Sir William Sargent, were of the opinion that his initial treatment had been inadequate and incomplete. Thereafter, Nazrul was taken to Vienna where his condition was diagnosed as incurable. He and his family returned to India in December 1953. He spent the rest of his life in utter misery.<br />Earlier his wife, Pramila Devi, had become ill in 1939 and though paralysed from the waist down, she spent the next 23 years of her life, caring for her husband until her death at the age of 54 on 30th June, 1962. As per her last wish, she was buried at her husband’s birthplace, Churulia. Nazrul’s sons, Aniruddha died in 1974 at the age of 43, and Shabyashachi in 1979 at the age of 50.<br />In 1962, Nazrul was awarded the ‘Padmabhushan’ Title by the Govt. of India. In 1969, Rabindra Bharati University honored him D. Lit Degree. In Nazrul’s opinion, the highest recognition he ever cherished was when his master-poet, the inspiration of his life, Rabindranath Tagore dedicated his “Bashanto” opera to Nazrul, saying that Nazrul had ushered in Bashanto (Spring) in the life of the Nation, thus recognizing him as a wonderful poet.<br />When in sound health, Nazrul had earlier come to Dhaka in December 1940 to attend the 1st anniversary of the Dhaka radio station. In 1971, the Government in exile of Bangladesh continued to pay the pension due to him by the Government of East Pakistan. After the liberation of Bangladesh, at the request of the Bangladesh Government, the Government of India allowed Nazrul to be taken for residing in Bangladesh with his family.<br />Nazrul arrived on 24 May 1972, as guest of the Government of Bangladesh and was accorded due honours. The President and Prime Minister paid their homage to him. In 1974, the Dhaka University awarded him the degree of Doctorate of Literature. In 1976, the Government awarded him the “Ekushey Padak” Gold Medal.<br />On 22 July 1975, Nazrul was transferred to the Post Graduate Hospital for continuous medical supervision. He spent the remaining one year, one month and eight days of his life there. Towards the end of August 1976, his condition deteriorated, his temperature shot up to over 105 degrees, and on 29 August 1976, he breathed his last at 10:10 a.m.<br />As soon as Nazrul’s death was broadcast over Radio and T.V. the news spread like wild fire and plunged the Bengali nation in profound gloom. Life came to a standstill in Dhaka as thousands of men and women lined up to have a last glimpse of the rebel poet’s mortal remains in the Teacher-Students’ Centre of the University of Dhaka.<br />At 5 p.m. on the same day, Kazi Nazrul Islam was buried with full state honour beside the Dhaka University mosque. Now almost three decades after his death, Kazi Nazrul Islam resides in the hearts of millions of Bangladeshis as their national poet.<br />Emerging from the overall backwardness of the Muslims of Bengal in the 1920s, Nazrul injected the community with a much-needed sense of self-confidence. Almost single handedly, Nazrul brought about a renaissance amongst Bengali Muslims, and led them into modernity. The genius of Nazrul achieved the impossible and the Bengali nation remains eternally indebted to him.<br />Bangladesh honoured itself by honouring Kazi Nazrul Islam with the citizenship of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Now, the world over, Nazrul is known as the National Poet of Bangladesh.<br />By the time he passed away in Dhaka on August 29, 1976 -- having spent 34 years in paralytic torment – he had become a legend, the exemplar of a religious sensibility that was not bounded by abstract definitions, but defined itself in the acts of devotion, empathy and creativity. He was the Rebel Poet. His humanistic vision, philosophy and spirit transcended many orthodox boundaries. He was also a very down-to-earth, maatir-manush, his communication so simple and straight-forward that could be understood by the masses.<br />In those days of India’s struggle for Independence and Undivided Bengal, Nazrul always believed in the strength of Hindu-Muslim Unity. Being a Muslim, he himself married a Hindu Woman, Pramila Devi, and also wrote devotional songs – Shyama Sangeet – dedicated to the Hindu Goddess – Ma Kali. He deserves to be known as a very versatile poet, lyricist and writer. He was a mass-oriented, revolutionary, literary figure, always protesting against bigotry, injustice, extremism, fanaticism, exploitation, oppression and inequality of all kinds. He was a bold and undaunted activist always feared by the establishment. He was a passionate advocate of religious harmony always advocating better hindu-muslim relationships. Through his songs and poetry, he propagated the universal values of love, peace, tolerance, freedom, justice, harmony and cooperation. As a persona, he had an indomitable human spirit and was full of love, valour, creativity, humanity and romanticism. Within the United States alone, much emphasis has been placed upon the rise of the Latino population and how by the year 2050, half of the US population will be non-white.<br />However, what hasn?t been discussed with as much clarity is the growing niche of Asian Latinos, a new cultural and marketing hybrid. Typically considered as separate and distinct population silos, the Latino and Asian communities collectively could potentially steer the course of the nation far more dramatically than ever possibly conceived.<br />What is an Asian Latino?<br />The term Asian Latino is actually a concept that is defined in two distinct yet similar ways. First, there is a cultural definition of Asian Latinos, which comes as a direct result of cross-cultural marriage between the two groups over several centuries in South and Central America. Eventually through immigration, the descendents of these cross-cultural unions can also be found throughout the United States.<br />Second, the term Asian Latino is also used to define a combined marketing niche of America's two fastest growing immigrant populations, Latinos and Asians. The two groups share similarities in the fact that both are non-English speaking groups which have migrated to the US and now have given birth to multiple generations, some of whom are bilingual, but all born and raised in America.<br />From a cross-cultural marriage perspective, Asian Latinos developed primarily from the migration of Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Syrians. In fact, Filipinos are recorded to have visited the Americas well over 500 years ago, before the Columbian-era.<br />Filipinos assisted Spanish colonists by becoming sailors on the Manila galleons which were huge multi-decked wooden cargo ships that sailed across the Pacific Ocean from the Philippines to New Spain (Mexico).<br />The galleons carried everything from spices, porcelain, and ivory, to silk cloth and lacquerware to be sold to European countries. The Manila-Acapulco galleon was a lucrative one, but when Mexico broke free of Spain?s control in 1821, many Filipino sailors never returned home and remained in Acapulco.<br />However, many other Asians migrated to Central and South America as political refugees from WWII and the Korean and Vietnamese Wars. Yet many other Asians migrated to the region to seek better economic opportunity. In fact the term, "coolie" was often used in a derogatory manner to refer to unskilled labor from Asian countries, many of whom were young men who traveled to other parts of the world for work.<br />The result has been mixed Latino-Asian offspring spanning across South and Central America. Take Brazil for example: there is estimated to be over one million ethnic Japanese living in the country, not to mention Japanese communities located in Columbia, Argentina, Peru and other parts of Latin America.<br />Approximately 15% of Peru's population is considered to be Chinese, not to mention other inhabitants of Western Asian countries (Syria, Turkey) who have also settled throughout Latin America as well.<br />In an interview with Kipp Cheng of Diversity Magazine, Saul Gitlin of the marketing firm, Kan ... Lee explains that "When they come to the United States, their primary language is Spanish or Portuguese, not Korean or Japanese." So there is indeed some degree of cultural assimilation which fuses these two groups together as one.<br />The Asian Latino Marketing Niche<br />Although the actual number of ethnically mixed Asian Latinos in the United States is unknown, they are considered to be very few in number, hence the use of the term Asian Latino which actually has a greater value for marketing purposes.<br />When marketing strategists pair both ethnic groups together what emerges is a potential marketing bonanza. The similarities between the two population groups are indeed striking. In addition to migrating to the US and retaining their native language and in many instances becoming bilingual, Asians and Latinos also share other commonalities as well.<br />Both ethnic groups reside heavily in western American states, creating a potential voting block should they decide to organize on key political issues. According to the US Census Bureau figures released in 2004, both groups are expected to triple in size by the year 2050 in comparison to the Black and White population groups which are expected to grow at 71% and 7% rates respectively.<br />Today in cities across the country, Asian and Latino businesses are often located next to each other or in close proximity, such as Atlanta?s Buford Highway corridor and in both urban and suburban pockets of the city of Milwaukee. Hence, small ethnocentric businesses play a key role in serving the Latino and Asian communities respectively.<br />With so many similarities and an expected triple digit jump in growth, the combined Asian and Latino populations in America could one day wield enormous financial power and wealth across America.<br />The Political Landscape of the Asian Latino Community<br />According to the 2004 Urban Institute Studies Program report by Dr. Jeffrey S. Passel, neither Latinos nor Asians vote according to their current population proportions. According to the study, back in 2000, Latinos represented 12.6 % of the total U.S. population, but only 5.3% of the votes cast. Asians were 4.2% of the population but only cast 1.9% of votes. In contrast, whites accounted for 70% of the population, but over 81% percent of all votes.<br />In addition, the Urban Institute Studies report also revealed that about 62% of Latinos could not register to vote in 2000 because they were either too young or not U.S. citizens; 59% of Asians also could not register. In contrast, only 35% of Blacks and 25% of Whites could not register to vote for demographic reasons.<br />However, all of this could drastically change as the individual Latino and Asian populations age and become eligible to vote plus legalized immigrants in both communities begin to exercise their right to vote in greater numbers. Once this happens, not only will both population groups significantly influence western state voting, they will also become a major swing vote in key political states such as Ohio.<br />The Future of Asian Latinos<br />With tremendous population, financial, and political power to come for the Asian and Latino communities, America will no longer resemble cookie cutter board images in vast sections of the country. Instead, Middle America will soon become every image, sight, and sound of the evolving and dynamic groups of today. It was a festive occasion with people lined three deep along both sides of Ujazdowskie Avenue; cheering loudly and waving small flags as the troops passed smartly in review. I use "Armed Forces Day" as a generic term to place the event in the context of what we are used to seeing in other countries. Ask any Pole about August 15 and they will tell you that it is a holiday commemorating the Battle of Warsaw, or as they call it, "The Miracle on the Vistula."<br />The Battle of Warsaw took place in August 1920 when Bolshevik forces of the Red Army crossed the Vistula River, intent on overrunning Warsaw before continuing west to join their allies in Germany. As the battle began, the Bolsheviks anticipated a quick and decisive victory; one that would result in the total annihilation of Poland. Instead, statesman and national hero General Josef Pilsudski rallied his badly outnumbered forces, counter attacked, and drove the Bolsheviks back across the Vistula and into Russia. Subsequent victories ensured Poland's independence and secured its eastern borders. The Warsaw victory was dramatic and totally unexpected; truly a "Miracle on the Vistula."<br />These days the Polish military consists of four branches; the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Special Forces. The latter, sometimes referred as "GROM" was formed in 1990 to conduct Counter Terrorism, Direct Action , and Unconventional Warfare. Little is known about GROM's activities, which are highly classified, but it is rumored that their contribution to allied operations in Iraq has been significant. Although the size of the Polish armed forces is modest (22nd in the world according to nationmaster.com) their presence has been felt on a global basis. Currently over 4500 personnel are deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, Bosnia, Kosovo, Chad and Estonia<a href="http://tokocdkomputerpopuler.wordpress.com/">.<br /></a>Participants in the parade included personnel and equipment from all four branches of the service; although the Air Force flyover was notably absent due to thunderstorms and tornados in the local area. I watched the flyover rehearsal from my garden the day before and can attest that it would have been a dramatic display of air power including flights of F-16 and MIG-29 fighters.<br />What makes the parade a perennial favorite with spectators is that it consists not only of personnel and equipment from the current military, but those of units from days gone by. Thus, to the delight of adults and children alike, there was an ample display of old tanks, bicycles, antique cars, knights and horses; as well people dressed in colorful, yet authentic uniforms. It was a spectacle to warm the heart of the most jaded photographer.<br />As I watched the troops pass in review, the words that came to my mind were "proud," "professional," and "polished." And why shouldn't they be? The Polish military has been defending their country since 972 A.D. when they first defeated the Germans. Since then, they have tangled with the Teutonic Knights, Russians, Germans, Swedes, Tartars, and the Ottoman Empire, to name just a few. And they seldom lost, except under the most lop sided circumstances. Poland is a loyal ally of the United States. The question now is how and when do we OFWs in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia celebrate Father's day?<br />OFWs, particularly in Saudi Arabia, generally can be grouped into two, the first group is those OFWs whose families are staying with them, and the second groups are those workers who do not have any family with them.<br />Let me discuss the "Family status" first. As I have mentioned earlier we do it "silently". We celebrate it at home with my kids and my wife. A simple dinner with our favorite chicken "Tinola", it is one of our favorite dish where the chicken is chopped into smaller pieces, boiled, mixed with salt, garlic, sliced ginger and sliced green papaya. Then each of my children hands over their gifts to me. Each one of them gives me a kiss on the cheek. Of course, I have a special kiss from my wife too. We then watch the "TFC" TV show together. This is done on the actual Father's day. Some families go to restaurants and invite their best friends to have a dinner with them.<br />Now, the "Bachelor Status" celebrates it differently. On the other hand, there are specific details and events suggesting that this time, perhaps, things will be different. If correct, the bombing of Iran will begin no later than this coming Sunday, April 6, 2008. That day will mark the beginning of the end.<br />Exactly how the rumor started is unknown. The Russians, contrary to popular opinion, enjoy a greater freedom of information than that offered by the vaunted American so-called free press - which is anything but. The absolute control of our mainstream media, in fact, insures that Americans are among the most uninformed and misinformed people in the world.<br />Regarding Iran, you are no doubt aware that Admiral William Fallon, the last real commanding officer to stand up to Bush, was recently fired. Bush can now count on the sycophantic approval of General David Petraeus and others of similar ilk to approve any deranged plans that come to mind.<br />Those plans include the destruction of Iran's nuclear, governmental and all military facilities. Civilian collateral damage is expected to be incredible but, as usual, of little concern to the warmongers in Washington.<br />What lends more than a little credence to this latest of cataclysmic rumors are Russian military reports indicating greatly increased U.S. military activity near the Iranian borders. That, and a new U.S. carrier group enroute to the area.<br />We are also sending Patriot anti-missle systems to the area - and for the first time since our invasion of Iraq in March, 2003, our Navy has achieved the same numerical presence in the Persian Gulf.<br />I firmly believe that we'll be at war with Iran, if not by April 6th, then certainly sometime prior to the expiration of Bush's term. I think that specific dates of impending doom are floated, more often than not, as trial baloons meant to gauge public reaction.<br />So forget April 6 for now. We'll be at war, or not, and there's not much you can do about it, or about the devastating effects of Iran's expected retaliation. I won't even mention the most obvious or the most likely. The most likely is the end of superpower Amerika - which, incidentally, is well under way, war or no war.<br />Consider just a few current events which have a direct and deadly bearing on your life. Consider, for example, the prices of oil and gas. So what if gas goes up, you say. What's another buck or two? It's the thousand dollar cost in diesel fuel for truckers to load up their rigs, to deliver food to your local supermarket.<br />That cost is already causing a slowdown. It will soon put independent truckers out of business. Food prices are rising. Some foods will soon be rationed. Without remedial action, supermarket shelves will be empty and food riots will begin. When that happens, an agreement signed on Feb. 14 in Texas will go into effect.<br />This is a bilateral Civil Assistance Plan between the military forces of the United States and Canada that allows the military from each nation to support the military of the other during times of civil emergencies. Canadian troops would patrol American cities during times of civil unrest, and provide assistance to US Police in rounding up hungry, violent masses of Americans for arrest and incarceration.<br />One soldier just back from Iraq says that U.S. troops are being trained to confiscate guns and shoot American citizens, including members of their own families, as part of impending Martial Law.<br />Recent estimates project Canadian armed forces in our cities as early as this summer. Food shortages being reported worldwide are expected to cause food riots in American cities at that time.<br />Your life might depend on the prices of oil and gas. And while you're at it, maybe it wouldn't hurt to urge your Congress Critter to publicly investigate why our mainstream media has the powers of complete censorship and absolute control over what the American sheeple are allowed to know - about this, and many other subjects.<br />But maybe it's all a wild April Fools Day exaggeration. While you're driving to work, keeping an eye on the gas gauge and slowing down for unmarked patrol cars, and keeping your eyes peeled for Canadian tanks - you remember the subprime mortgage on your home. And April Fools Day is over.<br />We've seen some of the pictures on TV. Homes foreclosed. Furniture and personal possessions dumped unceremoniously on lawns. And there are 2 million plus homes to go! American dreams shattered on the altars of greed, big oil and proxy wars for Israel.<br />Some homeowners are returning their keys and walking away - devastated by thoughts of their continued obligation to repay their extorted mortgage payments, whether in ownership of their homes or not. Wondering how they'll survive without shelter or income. Contemplating a new lifestyle in a homeless shelter or in a cardboard box under a bridge.<br />Some are trashing their homes before they walk away. An increasing numbers do they need? (Welcome to Wal-Mart. How I can help you?")<br />No other jobs left. Put your money in silver or gold or weapons of self defense. A good shotgun might come in handy. Or find a good MRE supplier - Meals Ready to Eat. I hear they're quite tasty now. Think survival.<br />If you're in the stock market, get out. Especially, get out of dollars. The American Dollar has begun its final slide to oblivion. Its value, sometime this year, should be close to zero. You might want to stock up on Chinese Renminbis, especially if you plan continued Wal-Mart purchases. And a nice stack of Euros would certainly help. Even now, countries all over the world are demanding payment in just about anything except the American dollar.<br />Another sign of the Good Times going Bye Bye is the Congressional Budget Office's projection that, as of the fiscal year beginning in October, 28 million US citizens will be using foodstamps to buy essential food. A new symbol of poverty and obvious, disgraceful reminder that the richest country in the world is facing financial ruin.<br />Maybe we should hasten that day by starting another war in the Mid East. After all, Afghanistan and Iraq are costing us only 12 billion dollars a month. That's 12 billion dollars. Every month. I'm sure we could find a few more bucks by cutting back on benefits to wounded servicemen. By eliminating wasteful school programs or health benefits for disadvantaged kids, or repairing deteriorating infrastructure - or any number of other non-essentials.<br />Here's another little item of interest you might want to consider as you attempt to economize and survive the meltdown and destruction of almost everything. That used car you might be considering buying now comes with a catch. An unbelievable, Police State loss of freedom catch designed to manipulate and control another aspect of your life.<br />It's icing on the cake. Thought you lost everything? Here's something you could lose, on top of everything else. It's like visiting a loan shark, knowing you'll have 2 broken legs when you miss your promised payment. It's legitimized crime.<br />An estimated 7 million subprime used car borrowers are discovering a little box under their dashboards that forces them to make their payments on time. A light flashes and a beeper goes off when payment is due, usually every 2 weeks. When payment is made, the customer receives a six-digit code number to reset the box.<br />If payment is not made - for whatever reason - the vehicle won't start and a Repo man is notified. A recent innovation is connecting the device to a global positioning unit. The car automatically shuts off and a message goes out to the lender with its exact location - making repossession easier.<br />Can you picture the driver of such a car, who has just lost his home to foreclosure - who has just lost his job due to outsourcing - who has used up his allotment of food stamps - who is looking for a warm place to spend the night - any place - wondering about his prospects, his future, his next meal - when suddenly his car stops. Lights on his dashboard begin to blink. A buzzer goes off. Again and again and again. How does he feel? What does he do?<br />Can you spell Road Rage? That doesn't begin to describe it. I know what I'd like to do if I found myself in that situation. And if I was the predatory finance company manager who made such loans, I think an investment in a good Kevlar vest would be mandatory.<br />But, of course, things could be worse. Really? Newsflash: Your government is your enemy. As Kris Kristofferson used to say, Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. How much more are you prepared to lose? You are about to experience freedom - Kristofferson's version. Go back and reread Orwell's 1984. You might find yourself - and your chosen future.<br />Getting back to the impending war with Iran, here are a few more tidbits suggesting its actual possibility.<br />Saudi Arabian newspaper Okaz reporting on Dick Cheney's March 22 visit, said they were preparing to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the Kingdom following warnings of possible attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactor.<br />Vladimir Putin received an interesting presentation at the NATO summit in Romania this week. The Russians were advised to remain neutral in the scheduled attack against Iran's nuclear facilities. As usual, American "diplomacy" consisted of bribes and threats.<br />NATO would reject Ukraine and Georgia's memberships, and planning for a US Missle Shield in the Czech Republic and Poland would be terminated.<br />On the threat side, the Russians could expect American and European banks to deliberately collapse the Western banking system and the US Dollar - which would create the loss of almost $800 billion of Russian foreign reserves.<br />It will be interesting to examine the Russian response - especially in light of their recently published statement to the effect that an attack on Iran would be considered an attack on Russia.<br />Perhaps we should put our hopes in the statement last November by Yuri Baluyevsky, chief of Russia's general staff, that Russia is not "obliged to defend the world from the evil Americans."<br />What Russia will do - or China - is anyone's guess. Both are heavily invested in Iran. Saudi Arabia has ordered its people to prepare for nuclear war.
